Jewelry plays a dramatic role in one’s life. Though it’s associated with a woman more it’s still used by both sexes to show their nobility and wealth. It’s used for Bridal wear, Weddings as an ornament of decoration, to please oneself, to enhance looks. In earlier days Jewelry were used in sacrifices to appease the gods. The Chinese often placed their jewelry in their graves.
Today jewelry has a wide range of ornaments included. It can be diamonds, sapphires, gems, pearls or any other stone. In earlier days Jewelry was made up of different materials such as bone or stone or gems. Jewelry in the Indus Valley was worn predominantly by females, who wore numerous clay or shell bracelets on their wrists. India enjoyed a continuous development of art forms for some 5000 years. One of the first to start jewelry making were the peoples of the Indus Valley Civilization.
By 1,500 BC the peoples of the Indus Valley were creating gold earrings and necklaces, bead necklaces and metallic bangles. Before using metals they started bead trade. Beads in the Indus Valley were made using simple techniques. This art form was often passed down through family. Jewelry making in Asia started in China 5,000 years ago and in the Indus Valley region later on. With roots set deep in religious designs, Asian jewelry was very decorative and used most often in ceremonies.
Certain types of jewelry even to this day represents a culture. Various forms of Jewelry include tikka or the spherical pendant for the forehead; dangling earrings called jhumkas; hansli or the choker; nath or the nose ring which may be attached with a chain to the adjacent jhumka; a girdle or taqri for the waist; a series of bracelets called kadas; payals or anklets with tiny bells on them; and finally the chakti or toe rings of the married women.
Various designs of Jewelry has been done for centuries by Hindu’s ,muslims,Italians,Africans and still continues to be adored by People. Certain place names are also associated with aparticular gem such as Singapore is know for high carats of gold, Hyderabad is known for pearls………….and so on.
Amazing creativity is diplayed by jewelers. The art form of any Jewel such as cut diamonds, crystals, Swarovski’s, gems , sterling silver , gold ……..come in ranges differentiated by Carats, colour, pure or mixed with some other metal, cost, fine tuned in a pure form / crude form ………..and lots more types of differentiations. The northeastern states of Assam, Nagaland and Mizoram top the list of producers of such jewelry.
Southwestern influenced silver as well as toe rings, anklets, cross pendants, and more are on display, sought after and on display all over the world and in every culture known to mankind. It is truly a universal love that we have for jewelry.
